A Book

"I brought you a book, it should help pass the time while you're here," the nurse offers a book to the child.

She hadn't spoken in weeks. Her vocal chords were severed in a car accident, but they were repaired. Despite that she hasn't uttered a single word. Doctors had tried, but nothing. She would open her mouth and nothing would come out. Mores tests were run, always the same results. She could speak, she just would not.

"Thank you," the girl growled in a voice not her own.

The nurse smiled and motioned to keep her lips sealed. Outside the doctors still argued about the best course of action. None of them had treated the girl like a human, only a test subject. She was afraid of them. Each time she would see the doctors, it would only be more trouble. Sometimes a smile and a book can do what medicine cannot.
