Breakfast On The Boardwalk

"Enjoying the food son?"

"The best pancakes I've ever had. I wish I could eat them forever," I laugh with a mouth full.

I love moments like this. Eating breakfast at some random spot with my dad. Today we stopped on this place right off the pier. Usually we go on our birthdays, but this time he just wanted to have breakfast with me. I wish days like this would never end. A great meal, some fun laughs. It's all too perfect. Nobody got an order wrong, and the pancakes are too good. Crunchy on just the edges, soft on the inside and the center is so fluffy it just melts in your mouth.

"How about we go watch the game after this," Dad asks.

"I'd love to, but I don't think that's possible."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm not really here with you dad."

"Of course you are."

"No, I'm not and you aren't really my dad."

"Of course I am. Ask me anything."

"Are you my dad?"

"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"

"I know you're lying. My dad always said he's not my dad. Just some man who likes to see me and take care of me. Besides, we never had breakfast on a boardwalk."

The glitches in the simulation start to appear. A light flicker here, a random glass moving there. It was a good simulation. Unique, built just for me based on a portion of my brain waves and what they knew about my life. Soon everything starts to fade out. The simulation knows it's been beat. I watch faces light up around me. Some kind of crowd surrounds the stage I'm sitting on. I'm not too sure where I am. Probably a side effect of the simulation.

"Congratulations, you just won one million Taka," a man with a microphone approaches me. The crowd goes wild.

I remember where I am. A game show. If you beat the simulation you win a million Taka. Enough money to set you up comfortably for the rest of your life on any planet that you choose. I guess I beat the simulation and moved up a lot of tax brackets. Still, I wish I was back in the simulation. One last breakfast with my dad.
