Burial Plot

The asteroid raced towards Earth, determined in its destination, promising extinction. Chaos reigned globally. Humanity’s mood, despair. I spent my final days doing the one thing I never thought I’d do, digging my own grave. There would be plenty of bodies to bury no doubt. Probably wouldn't be a lot of people to bury them.

I always wanted to be buried next to my wife. She went way too young. Drunk driver. That was 8 years ago. I haven't felt the touch of a woman since. I didn't want to. Once you've been touched by your soulmate, it makes no difference who touches you after. I bought the plot when I bought hers. I had planned to kill myself, but just couldn't pull the trigger. She always said I hesitated too much.

The sky glows bright red with the impact immanent. I toss my shovel to the side and climb the ladder down into my grave. Six feet deep, while still alive. I don't even think it was six feet deep. I just dug until I felt it was deep enough. When the asteroid slams into Earth, I just want my body in the right place. I don't want to be left on the ground or dropped in the mass graves. I just want to be here with my darling.

I rest my head on the pillow I brought and close my eyes. Soon eternal sleep will set in. I don't need to see it, I just need it to come. Hopefully I'll see my baby when I wake up.
